Hamilton Food Share
East Hamilton Spiritual Church is a proud supporter of Hamilton Food Share.
We are firm believers, that no matter where we are in life, there is always someone who has less, and that we need to do our part to make sure we are taking care of each other.
Through the generosity & compassion of our congregation, we are able to provide HFS with regular donations of foods needed to fill the shelves of our local food banks.
Your donations can be placed in the deacon's bench or basket in our church coatroom.
EHSC also dedicates a portion of many of our special events, such as our Halloween with Spirit event, to be a Hamilton Food Share donation.
About Hamiton Food Share
Hamilton Food Share‘s purpose is to increase our community's capacity to reduce hunger. We do this by supplying much needed food supplies and short-term storage to food banks and hot meal programs. Additionally, our organization establishes community partnerships, donor relations and fundraising activities that support our food recovery operation.
Our support is vital as the resources allocated by Hamilton Food Share defray costs for the emergency food programs and redirect these savings to other program areas. The second purpose of our organization is to work collaboratively across every sector of the community to bring about awareness of hunger, its root causes and the impact it creates for people in need.
Emergency Food Access Total Visits
Over 20,000 people were assisted in the month of March 2015, up 18.5% from the year prior. The number of adults assisted totalled just over 13,000. up 18% over the year prior.
Children assisted in March 2015, totalled 7,112:
0-2 YEARS: 1,215 (17%)
3-5 YEARS: 1,219 (17%)
5-18 YEARS: 4,678 (66%)
Local food banks give out a minimum of 3 to 5 days worth of emergency food for each monthly visit. The hunger gap is deeper than that for over 3,000 households representing approximately 4,700 people. the hunger gap for these households is between 6 and 20 days worth of food needed to make ends meet. It is no surprise that the 2 top sources of income for these households is Ontario Works and Ontario Disability Support Program.
